Capt. Bill Fields Your Fly Fishing Questions
<QUESTION>
Are there any diving flies on the market that you are aware of that
have a lip like a crankbait to get the fly down?
<ANSWER>
There are flies available with crankbait lips.most are tied by local
tiers.ask your local fly shop or club for tiers in your area.also
try cabelas, orvis,the fly shop, world wide sportsman and other
mail order catalogs.check the eangler pro shop at this site we may
have them in stock.
flies with lips work well,but they are harder to cast because of
wind resistance.
<QUESTION>
What fly patterns would you recommend for Tarpon fishing?</QUESTION>
<ANSWER>
Brown cockroach,apte#1 orange/yellow,black death,purple people eater,apte#2
tan,tarpon bunny,brown grizzly,blue grizzly and deep water tarpon
in red/black and red and white are sure fire tarpon getters.tie
these on 3/0 hooks.
for baby tarpon use a smaller bodied fly tied on #2 hooks.use 5/0
hooks for deep water tarpon flies.
<QUESTION>
Are the odds of catching a bonefish better on a fly or with live
bait?</QUESTION>
<ANSWER>
Live bait for sure.bonefish are attracted to smell and fresh shrimp
has a smell bonefih love.flies like the crazy charlie,clouser minnow,gotcha,epoxy
shrimp and epoxy puff are top bonefish flies but live bait will
usually win out every time.
Purists do not read this!try staking out at a likely bonefish spot
and chum the spot with fresh shrimp, cut in small pieces.when the
bonefish start to feed on the shrimp, make your cast.
<QUESTION>
What are the ideal conditions to catch snook on a fly? I want to
do this, but I don't want to waste time if my odds are not too good.
<ANSWER>
The ideal conditions to catch snook on fly is when they are feeding.if
you know when and where, toss a baitfish imitation and be ready.
sight fishing snook on the flats is hard. If you see the snook,it
probably sees you.try a bait fish imitation tossed in front of the
snook.always strip it away from the fish,snook do not like baitfish
that attack them.
On the florida gulf coast, in the summer, snook prowl the surf line
looking for bait stirred up by the waves.walk the waters edge and
look for the snook.present a small glass minnow,white crazy charlie
or gotcha in front of the snook. As it swims up to it make small
hops with the fly.
Probably the easiest way to catch snook on fly is around dock lights.
Snook lay around docks trying to eat baitfish attracted to the light.try
a glass minnow,small seaducer or a shrimp imitation for fast action.
Here is another "purist do not read this warning"if all
else fails try chumming the snook with stunned pilchards or shrimp.sometimes
this free food will start a feeding frenzy and a fly will get eaten
very quickly.
<QUESTION>
Are the odds of catching a bonefish better on a fly or with live
bait?
<ANSWER>
Live bait for sure.bonefish have keen sense of smell.a piece of
fresh shrimp will draw bonefish from another zip code.
Popular bonefish flies like the crazy charlie,gotcha,epoxy puff,clouser
minnow,snapping shrimp and the horror catch lots of bones,but they
do not draw bones in from long distance.
Try staking out on a likely bonefish spot and tossing pieces of
fresh cut shrimp behind yor boat.when the bones appear and start
eating the shrimp, make your cast.
<QUESTION>
Can you recommend an affordable, but quality starter rod & reel
for me to get going on flyfishing for redfish?
<ANSWER>
A 9ft. fly rod and reel in the 8wt. or 9wt. class is a good place
to start for redfish.
ideally the reel should have a drag and be able to hold 200 yards
of dacron backing and the fly line. A weight forward floating fly
line to match your rod will get the job done.
sage and loomis are top of the line rods.penn, scott and redington
are moderately priced and are excellent rods.
Abel, Billy Pate, Tibor and Islander are the mercedes of fly reels.
The chevys are Penn, Lamson, Ross and Scientific Angler System 2.
All of the mentioned outfits will handle redfish, it's what your
budget can stand. Check the eangler pro shop for good prices and
quality.

<QUESTION>
What size rod/reel would you suggest for catching salmon from the
shore?
<ANSWER>
I would have to defer that question to our experts in the northwest.i
have caught salmon on 9ft.9-10wt.fly rods however i cannot answer
this as an expert.
<QUESTION>

<ANSWER>
With a phone call to the international game fish association(igfa)800-442-4665
i found out the answer.i spoke with doug in records and he informed
me that as of 1-11-2000 the current records are as follows:

<QUESTION>
What brand of fluorocarbon would you suggest for tropical saltwater
fishing?
<ANSWER>
I would definitely use flourocarbon for my leader material in tropical
saltwater fishing.it is nearly invisible under water and very abraision
resistant.it has very little stretch and sinks a little faster than
monofilament due to its higher specific gravity.
There are a number of brands on the market now.seaguar,offshore
angler,berkley,stren and others make or market it .it is more expensive
than mono by a lot but i think it draws more strikes. Check the
eangler pro shop to see what brands we carry and order on line.
<QUESTION>
where are the best places to salt water fly fish in Jacksonville
Fla?
<ANSWER>
Jacksonville does not have flats fishing in its pure form. The inside
waters of the St. Johns River and its tributaries offer redfish,trout,flounder
and others.the water is dark brown so sight fishing is limited.
Try the inside creeks and oyster bars.
Offshore fly fishing can be very exciting.try the reefs,wrecks,and
behind the shrimp boats for fast action on kings, spanish,jacks
and even tarpon.
Go to the eangler home page and click on the jacksonville region
and check out the eangler guide pro staff.call one of them to get
up to the minute reports.better yet,charter one of them for a day
or two.you can learn more in one day with a guide than you can in
one year of trying it yourself. Next Page
