Capt. Bill Fields Your Fly Fishing Questions
<QUESTION>
Are there any diving flies on the market that you are aware of that
have a lip like a crankbait to get the fly down?
<ANSWER>
there are flies available with crankbait lips.most are tied by local
tiers.ask your local fly shop or club for tiers in your area.also
try cabelas, orvis,the fly shop, world wide sportsman and other
mail order catalogs.check the eangler pro shop at this site we may
have them in stock.
flies with lips work well,but they are harder to cast because of
wind resistance.good fishing,bill miller
<QUESTION>
Can you reccomend a book for flyfishing for redfish in Texas? I've
never been there before and am thinking about hitting the flats
near Corpus Christi. Thanks
<ANSWER>
the best book i know of on redfish ,is the redfish book by frank
sargeant.it is available in the eangler pro shop.this book covers
redfish in general with a florida focus.it will help you wherever
you fish for reds.
<QUESTION>
Have you ever fished off a sit-on-top kayak?
<ANSWER>
i have and i found it very uncomfortable.i am seeing more and more
anglers fishing from kayaks.
the benefits are quitness and the ability to get in very shallow
water.the downside is lack of room and comfort and range of fishing
area you cover.another big plus is cost.
good fishing,bill miller
<QUESTION>
I would like to learn saltwater flyfishing this winter over a period
of one week in February or March. I'm from Long Island NY - would
prefer the Upper Keys. Need lodging and instruction for one person.
Can you point me in the right direction with a recomendation for
instructor and lodging. Bob Aviano
<ANSWER>

<QUESTION>
What's in the surf in Hilton Head during the middle-end of February?
<ANSWER>
i talked to my good friend and long time hilton head fishing guide,fuzzy
davis,about your question.fuzzy indicated that fly fishing in the
surf at hilton head this time of year is real tough.usually in february
,there are high winds which muddys the water.the surf is very shallow,
with no distinct drop off, so bait doesn't hold there often .no
bait means no fish.
fuzzy suggested targeting redfish on the river tidal flats.i have
done this and it is fun.redfish tail there just like anywhere else
and are great sport.capt.marty pinkston (843-842-5957)is recommended
by fuzzy.
if you wanted to try bait fishing in the surf, fish mullet at night
for big redfish.even this will be tough in february.
good luck,bill miller
<QUESTION>
Where is the best place to catch yellow fin tuna?
<ANSWER>
fly fishing for yellow fins is a prety specialized endeavor.not
all captains are set up to do this.make sure you check with your
guide if you want to fly fish.
north carolinas outer banks is a hotspot september thru mid january.usually
baits are trolled until the tuna are found then chunking,similar
to chumming,is used to keep the tuna close to the boat in fly rod
range.call our carolina pro staff guides for more info.
in the florida keys yellowfins were targeted december thru mid january.reports
are ,they are not showing up in past numbers.check with the eangler
guides in key west for yellow tuna sightings.
captain allan card and captain al desilva,in bermuda,have set many
yellowfin fly rod records.check bermuda information for the numbers.
san diego,california has longe range boats that make overnight trips
for 2-5 days.these long range boats are experienced with fly fisherman.
magazine stories have documented the great action that takes place
on these trips.try the saltwater sportsman magazine web site for
stories.
if you just want to catch yellowfins, and are not wanting to target
flyrod, any of these areas ,including the new jersey area for canyon
trips ,will produce .make sure to get the right time of year.
good luck and good fishing,bill miller
<QUESTION>
I have recently had the good fortune of getting redfish to take
my fly. the problem is that they get off the hook very shortly thereafter.
I'm holding my rod up high after the hook is suppossedly set but
they seem not to be hooked even after I set the hook with my stripping
hand.Any advice would be helpful.
<ANSWER>
the first place to look would be your hook.make sure it is very
sharp.sharpen it or touch it up every time it is used.check it during
your day for sharpness,it may sometimes dull if it hits the side
of the boat,hangs on something,etc.
to make sure on the hook set,point your rod at the fly line as it
enters the water.keep your rod low,even touching the tip to the
water.
if you feel the strike,give a sharp pull with your line hand.as
the line comes tight,set the hook with a low, sideways pull of the
rod.keep the line tight by working your line hand.after the fish
is on ,then raise the rod.
if you see the strike, but do not feel it, make a long strip.if
there is no tension, keep stripping until until you feel tension.do
not lift your rod until the line is tight.if you lift the rod before
the hook is set the fly usually comes out of the water.the fish
loses the fly.by keeping the rod low the fly stays in the water.if
the fish misses,the fly is still where he can see it.
good luck and sharp hooks,bill miller

What equipment and bait do I need to catch THE GHOST in the Bahamas
on baitcasting tackle. What lures and what bait? I mainly use a
Daiwa CV 253 and ABU 5600 C4 Elite. What other species will I encounter
inshore on the flats and off a boat?

sounds like you need to check our general saltwater ask a guide

i would use an 7ft. spinning rod.it is easier to cast a light jig
or shrimp on 8lb. line.baracuda,permit,sharks and snapper are the
most frequent sightings on the flats.

<QUESTION>
I will be in Fort Myers, Fl from 3/6- 3/15. I will be fishing for
reds, trout, snook, pompono. What would be a good leader and tippet
selection for these species? Also what flies do you recomend for
this season? Thanks a million!! --AndrewB
<ANSWER>
dear andrew,
you are there at a good time.those fish should be active as the
weather is warming up.
i like a 9ft. leader.-4ft. of 30lb.- 3ft.of 20lb.-2ft.of8 or 10lb.you
may add 12-18inches of a shock or bite tippet if necessary.i use
20-30lb.for that.i recommend that you use flourocarbon for leader
material.it's invisible ,abrasion resistant,and presents the fly
well.
my favorite flys are the seaducer,deciever,and the clouser.have
a selection of colors and some tied weedless.i like a brown muddler
minnow for tailing redfish.other flys that resemble baitfish shapes
will work well.3-4inch baitfish flys , shrimp or small crab patterns
are good to have available.
good luck and good fishing,bill miller 1
