Capt. Bill Fields Your Fly Fishing Questions
<QUESTION>
What type of equip do I use for fishing for drum. I will be in Delaware
& NC this july?
Thanks
<ANSWER>
drum in deep water are hard to catch on fly.if you find them in
shallow water an 8or9wt. rod with matching reel should do the trick.
floating fly line, or maybe an intermediate line, with a 9ft.tapered
leader is the way to go.
drum,red or black,feed on the bottom.they like crabs,shrimp,and
small baitfish.try using a clouser minnow in brown and white.get
it down on the bottom and bounce it along.you want it to make little
puffs of mud as it moves.
don't be atraid to try other flys,many will work.start fishing on
the bottom and move up in the water column if that isn't producing.
good fishing,bill miller

What type of equip do I use for fishing for drum. I will be in Delaware
& NC this july?
Thanks
<ANSWER>
red and black drum are mostly bottom feeders.use weighted flys like
a clouser minnow and bounce them on the bottom so they puff up little
muds.brown or a darker color should be your first choice.if that
does not work try lighter colors.
a 9ft.8 or 9wt. rod with a weight forward floating fly line should
do the job.if the water is deep try a sink tip or intermediate fly
line.

<QUESTION>
I am a beginning flyfisherman.(about a year) I really want to start
tying my own flys. I have seen kits that come with everything, and
even really good instructions. My poblem is that every one of those
kits are for fresh water. The saltwater kits I have seen don't come
with very detailed instructions or videos. Are there any saltwater
kits for beginners(I have never tied a fly)that are really good.
Do I have to buy everything separately? I don't mind spending the
money but I want detailed instructions and preferably a video along
with the nice kit.I don't really want to start with a 50 or 60 dollar
kit that I will outgrow soon. I would rather spend the money now
and get quality stuff. Any suggestions?
<ANSWER>
you ask a very good question.the same question i had when i started
tying flys.
order from the eangler pro shop,"tying salt water flys with
jimmy nix",volumes #1 and#2.it is an excellent video .also
available is "tying flys for saltwater"(interactive cd-rom).lefty
kreh's book "saltwater fly patterns" is a must.
another very good way to learn is join a fly fishing club.they always
have tiers willing to teach newcomers.
all of these sources should give you the answers you seek.
<QUESTION>
I asked yesterday about fly tying videos and kits and you told me
to check out jim nix's videos and Lefty kreh's book,and the interactive
cd-rom. Well I looked in the pro shop and couldn't find any of them.
Are you sure that eangler carries these. I Would like to know where
I could get them if eangler doesn't carry them.
Thank you for everything

<QUESTION>
I'm trying to find information on how to get into the guiding profession.
Does anyone know of any schools or apprenticeship programs?
<ANSWER>
to become a guide you need to be licensed by the coast guard to
carry passengers for hire.you will need to pass a test and prove
time on the water.if you do all that you are a guide.it does not
mean you can put people on fish,but you are a guide.
i know of no schools to teach being a guide.find a mentor who is
a guide ,take his overflow and watch how he works,watch other guides,ask
questions,be prepared to starve and have a understanding wife who
has a good job.
best of luck,you will need it.there are thousands of new guides.
