Kingfish are here

By BILL MILLER

No more waiting for kingfish - they are here.
The hot spots this week are the Betty Rose, Indian Shores Reef and markers 5 and 6 in the Egmont ship channel. Cast-net white bait early along the beach or Sabiki it when you get to the fishing area. The reason the kings are there is because the bait is there. A major bite has been happening the first hour or two after sunup. If you can get bait and be there early, the action should be red hot. The bag limit is two per person and the minimum size limit is 24 inches to the fork.
The snook on the south shore of Tampa Bay are finally starting to bite consistently. Fishing Tuesday with captain Art Paiva, the “Hooked on Fishing” crew had a banner day on snook. Using white bait and fishing the mangroves from Cockroach Bay to Bishops Harbor produced hot action. When the bite slowed, a few crippled white baits tossed to the area of our corked baits resulted in instant hookups.
Look for tarpon to start showing at the Sunshine Skyway on this next full moon or the new moon following. The bait is there and the water temp is getting right, so it won’t be long before the silver kings are here in full force.

Captain Bill Miller hosts “Hooked on Fishing” on Thursdays and Sundays from 7-8 p.m., and Fridays and Mondays from 11 a.m.-noon on Bright House Networks Catch 47.
