BILL’S FISHING REPORTS
Current Advice for Catching More Fish
Trout action hot along
Gulf Beaches
By BILL MILLER
Jan 03, 2007
Silver trout have come in bunches along the Gulf beaches. Look
for them in 10 to 15 feet over hard bottom along St. Pete, Redington
and Indian Rocks Beach. A tandem-rigged Love’s Lure bounced
along the bottom will produce multiple hookups.
The winter speckled trout bite is on in St. Joseph Sound and
Clearwater Bay. The spoil islands along the Intracoastal Waterway
are popular spots. The islands get crowded and fished out quickly
so look for deep grass in three to five feet and bounce a dark
soft plastic jig off the bottom for faster action and more fish.
In addition to speckled trout, expect ladyfish, bluefish and
mackerel action.
The shallow end south of Skyway Fishing Pier, by the toll booth,
has been red hot for mackerel and bonito. Silver spoons and
cut white bait under a cork have been getting most of the fish.
A few pompano have showed up in Sarasota Bay, according to Dennis
Hart of Hart’s Landing. Silly Willy and Doc’s pompano
jigs are the hot lures and early morning is the hot time.
Captain Bill Caldwell reports some grouper moving into the 40-
and 50-foot depths southwest of Egmont. The 60-foot depth has
been the best, evidenced by Saturday’s limit catch of
gag grouper to 12 pounds and mangrove snapper to seven pounds.
Captain Bill Miller hosts “Hooked on Fishing” on
Thursdays and Sundays from 7-8 p.m., and Fridays and Mondays
from 11 a.m.-noon on Bright House Networks Catch 47.
