Current Advice for Catching More Fish
Head East To Try Luck With Sailfish
By BILL MILLER
Feb. 7, 2007
Bay area anglers wishing to try fishing for sailfish should
head to the east coast. Sailfish action, although off a bit
from last year, is still very consistent.
The “Hooked on Fishing” crew fished a half-day with
captain Mike Genoun of Florida Sportfishing Magazine last week
out of Hillsborough Inlet at Pompano Beach. Drifting a big whitebait
under a balloon, I was able to hook a sail that threw the hook
after a series of spectacular jumps. We saw sailfish free jumping
and other boats hooked up in the area.
Sheepshead are biting well around Bay area bridges. Shrimp,
fiddler crabs and green mussels are the best baits.
St. Joseph Sound trout action is red hot. Anglers using soft
plastics on the deep grass flats are scoring with huge numbers
of speckled and silver trout. Speckled trout season is open
south of Fred Howard Park at Tarpon Springs. North of that line,
it is catch-and-release only.
Silver trout are still thick off Redington Beach and in the
ship channels leading into Port Manatee, the Alafia River, Davis
Islands and Weedon Island. Tandem-rigged Love’s Lures
tipped with shrimp will produce spectacular action.
Captain Bill Miller hosts “Hooked on Fishing” on
Thursdays and Sundays from 7-8 p.m., and Fridays and Mondays
from 11 a.m.-noon on Bright House Networks Catch 47.
