BILL’S FISHING REPORTS
Current Advice for Catching More Fish
Reds Sighted Throughout Bay Area
Posted September 06, 2006

Even though snook season just opened up, redfish are
the stars of the show. Big spawning schools of redfish have
been reported in Hillsborough Bay in the Kitchen and Bullfrog
Creek area. In Old Tampa Bay, the St. Pete/Clearwater Airport
flats and Weedon Island flats are home to big schools of hungry
reds.
Captain Al Dopirak reports Caladesi and Honeymoon Islands are
loaded with reds. Fish the high tide around the mangrove line
and as the tide drops, move to the channel edges. Pinfish and
white bait under a cork have been the top fish-getter. Pinellas
Point, Piney Point and Tarpon Key are also holding good schools
of reds.
Mangrove snapper are still hungry along the ship channel edges
and bay artificial reefs. Small white baits and shrimp fished
on the bottom during the slower parts of the tide will catch
your limit. Don’t be surprised if a school of 30- to 50-pound
bull reds attack your baits. A few of these marauding schools
already have been sighted.
Now is a good time to cast net mullet. They are cruising the
mangrove edges in schools preparing for their big spawn in November
and December. The mullet are fat, which give them good taste,
and some even have roe. An 8-foot, 2-inch mesh mullet net is
your best bet to collect a few for the frying pan or smoker.
Red Tide has reared its ugly head in some parts of the Bay area.
