Big Pier 60 in Clearwater is reporting Spanish mackerel catches
all day on Gotcha plugs and spoons. Tina says nighttime is the
right time for snook. A lot of snook were caught before this
last front, including whoppers measuring 40 and 32 inches. Greenbacks
and ladyfish have been the best baits.
A big school of redfish has been showing up near the Redington
Long Pier. According to Don, live shrimp and pinfish have been
getting most of the bites. Mackerel have been biting early in
the morning, and whiting are providing good action all day.
John at The Pier in St. Petersburg reports a lot of redfish.
The slot-sized fish are in shallow water, and some monsters
to 25 pounds are out in deeper water. A few sheepshead are being
caught on fiddler crabs and green mussels, and mackerel are
taking cut greenbacks under a cork. Snook are biting shrimp
at night under the lights.
Big grouper are lurking around the Skyway piers. Fishing on
an outgoing tide with pinfish, Scooter has been hauling them
in. The mackerel bite is good early in the morning, and a few
kings have been caught. Pompano have been slow to bite.
Before this last cold front, some large kingfish were caught
along the Gulf beaches. Slow-trolling ladyfish and blue runners
within a mile of shore around diving birds and mackerel schools
produced tournament-winning kingfish to 48 pounds last weekend.
Captain Bill Miller hosts “Hooked on Fishing” on
