BILL’S FISHING REPORTS
Current Advice for Catching More Fish
by Capt. Bill Miller
3/2/06
Capt. Dave Markett has been seeing redfish and snook returning
to their spring spots while on the lookout for sheepshead. Big
sheepsheads up to five pounds are being caught skipping a whole
small shrimp or half a big shrimp underneath docks and structure.
Sheepshead appear to have survived the Red Tide better than
most species.
The docks and seawalls around Harbor Island and Davis Island
have been producing redfish and sheepshead for Capt. Ike Carrasquillo.
A few snook are being caught on dead bait. The big schools of
jacks have not shown yet, but should be downtown any day.
New penny colored jerk baits on an eighth ounce jig head have
been the favorite bait for Weedon Island redfish. Tournament
winner, Captain Kenny Hyatt reports several schools of reds
roaming the flats and actively feeding. Bait has been spotted
meaning spring fishing is at our doorstep.
Top female angler, Melissa Helms offers this tip for shallow
clear water fishing. Do not use a cork when fishing live shrimp.
Hook the shrimp in the horn and let it swim freely. The noise
of the cork hitting the water and the color of the cork in clear
water will spook already nervous fish.
I know this tip works. Fishing St .Josephs sound this week with
Capt. Jim Lemke, Melissa out fished everybody on the boat 2
to 1 using this technique.
